Summer Research Fellowships
This program supports Summer Research Fellows with twenty fellowships will be awarded to W&M students and 15 fellowships awarded to students currently attending Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University, or Thomas Nelson Community College. Participants undertake 10 weeks of full-time research in biology or a related field (very broadly defined). The research is designed by the participant and a sponsoring faculty member and is conducted at the College of William & Mary; it is expected to eventually result in publication and/or presentation. Funds are available to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors; exceptional projects from graduating seniors will also be considered. The fellowship carries a stipend of $4,000. Free campus housing is also provided. Applications are due in mid-February each year. Please follow the Applications Deadline link for exact due dates.
The program has supported a variety of different research of topics including: the rate of gametogenesis in hydrothermal vent polychaetes, neuromuscular adaptation to spaceflight, mechanisms regulating the nuclear localization of the thyroid hormone receptor, the cellular neurophysiology of breathing rhythms and temperature regulation, detector development for medical imaging, and the effectiveness of wetlands restoration.
